WHAT IS PALLIATIVE CARE?PATIENT INFORMATIONWhat Is Palliative Care? Palliative care is an approach to healthcare that seeks to alleviate pain and symptoms for those with a life-limiting illness. It is holistic care that supports your physical, psychological, emotional, and spiritual wellbeing. What Is A Life-Limiting Illness? A life-limiting illness is something that is progressive and cannot be cured. Examples include advanced cancers, or severe lung or heart conditions. How Can Palliative Care Help? Palliative care can provide excellent symptom control. It facilitates open and honest communication with you and your family or carers so that treatment decisions are in keeping with your values. It supports you to live as independently as possible given the circumstances, with a compassionate focus on quality of life. Palliative care used to be associated with end-of-life care, but now it can happen much earlier in the illness journey. Is Palliative Care The Same As End-Of-Life Care?Just because palliative care are involved it doesn’t necessarily mean that you will die soon. Some people receive palliative care on and o for years. However, end-of-life care is also an important part of what palliative care teams provide. When Can I Have Palliative Care?Some people think that palliative care can only be given when conventional treatments have stopped (such as chemotherapy/immunotherapy for advanced cancer), however this is not the case. You may benefit from palliative are at any stage to manage symptoms and complications of your condition. Early involvement means that emotional support and good symptom control can happen at an earlier stage. It has also been shown that early involvement with palliative care improves outcomes and quality of life, as well as reducing length of stay in hospitalWho Provides Palliative Care?Palliative care in Beacon Hospital is delivered by a team of consultants, doctors, specialist nurses and other allied health professionals. We work in a wider multi-disciplinary team to enable you to live as independently as possible and includes:• Physiotherapy• Occupational therapy• Medical Social Work• Psychological support • Pharmacy• Dietician• Spiritual support and chaplaincyWhere Can You Have Input From Palliative Care? In Ireland you can have access to palliative care at home, in hospitals or other settings such as nursing or residential care homes.
