SPEECH LANGUAGE THERAPY VIDEOFLUOROSCOPY SWALLOW X RAY PATIENT INFORMATION What is a Videofluoroscopy It is a moving X ray of someone swallowing It is recorded so that it can be played back later on Small amounts of di erent types of foods and drinks are given to the person to swallow Why is it Necessary A It is di cult to see exactly what happens in the throat during swallowing An x ray will show what happens when you swallow Nasal Cavity Food Tongue Food Pipe To Stomach Wind Pipe To Lungs B It may answer the following questions 1 Is food going down the wrong way 2 Why is it going the wrong way 3 How can the problem be overcome C It allows the Speech Language Therapist SLT to try special techniques to help overcome swallowing problems Who Should Have One Any person who is suspected of having swallowing or eating di culties dysphagia may benefit from a Videofluoroscopy Your Speech Language Therapist will discuss this with you

Who Should Have One Any person who is suspected of having swallowing or eating di culties dysphagia may benefit from a Videofluoroscopy Your Speech Language Therapist will discuss this with you Where do We Go You go to the Radiology Department on the ground floor of the Beacon Hospital and register at Radiology reception What Will Happen 1 You will be given di erent foods and drinks e g liquid paste yogurt bread and biscuit 2 The food and drinks contain contrast or are coated with contrast that shows up on the x ray 3 An X ray video of your swallow will be made 4 The X ray will take about 10 minutes however allow up to 1 hour for your entire visit 5 You will feel no pain you will be simply eating and drinking under instruction 6 You can stop at any time What Will Happen After The Videofluoroscopy 1 No results will be available on the day 2 The SLT will analyse the X ray pictures 3 The results will be sent to your doctor within 48 hours of the procedure 4 If you are attending another Speech Language Therapist in a di erent facility your Videofluoroscopy report will be sent to them They will discuss the results with you What Preparation is Necessary 1 No special preparation is needed 2 You do not need to fast 3 There is no need to undress You may be asked to remove necklace earrings or glasses 4 Please wear your hearing aid and bring your dentures if usually worn If you have any questions please contact speech and language therapy on 01 293 6692
