SURGICAL DAY UNIT PATIENT INFORMATION LEAFLET Please ensure to take this leaflet with you on the day of your planned procedure Before Your Surgery STEP 1 STEP 2 STEP 3 STEP 4 You will also be asked for the details of your Next of Kin and the nominated person collecting you after your procedure Register with reception and wait to be allocated an admission area STEP 2 Change into hospital gown Belongings locked away Prior to your procedure you will be asked to Admission by the nurse and or doctor Pre Op investigation and medication if necessary Wait to be called to the holding bay where your care will be taken over by theatre staff When your assigned admissions area is available you will be escorted into the unit and given all necessary information You will be shown to your cubicle and asked to change from your clothing into a hospital gown Pack belongings away in your bag or we can provide you with a bag Your belongings will be locked in a locker while you are in theatre You may return to a different cubicle after your operation Dentures and contact lenses must be removed before your procedure You will be permitted to keep these with you during the admission process Please leave anything of value at home or with your your next of kin prior to surgery This includes large quantities of money all jewellery and wedding bands If you require any assistance please don t hesitate to ask STEP 3 STEP 1 The Surgical Day Unit commonly referred to as the SDU is located on the first floor of Beacon Hospital You will be registered by the admin team at your allocated time You will be asked to provide your details please check these are all correct including spelling at the time of registration A nurse will carry out your admission assessment This involves asking details of your medical and surgical history including any medications you take Please have a list of all current medications with you The admission assessment needs to be completed even if you have been a patient with us before If you are staying overnight our Non Consultant Hospital Doctor NCHD will also see you

Depending on your procedure and history we may need to do the following Electrocardiogram ECG tracing of your heart Blood tests Ask you for a urine sample All inpatients are screened for Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus MRSA by taking swabs of the nose and groin Some procedures require medications prior to your procedure If your procedure is one of these the medications in question will be provided Although we do our best to keep to scheduled times delays can occur which are out of our control We will aim to keep you informed once we know of any delay to your theatre time We understand that it is normal to be nervous while waiting please feel free to ask if you have any questions or worries Once you have been admitted you may have time to read a book newspaper or use your phone STEP 4 When they are ready for you in theatre a nurse will bring you to an area called the holding bay Here you will see your Consultant and sign your consent form if you have not already done so You will also meet your theatre nurse and your Anaesthetist Your theatre nurse will receive a handover of care and complete a safety checklist Your Medical History Please include any medical conditions treatments or operations you may have had

Have you been fully vaccinated against Covid 19 Date of last vaccination _____ ____ ________ Current Medications Please include the name of the medication frequency and dosage MEDICATION FREQUENCY Allergy Information Please include allergies to medications foods or anything else DOSAGE Fasting Information Please ensure to follow the fasting advice given to you by your Consultant the scheduling team NPO means nothing by mouth This means that you should not eat or drink anything at all not even water Clear Fluids means only water or black tea may be consumed No other fluids or food are to be taken Please note that milk or sugar in your tea is prohibited when you are instructed to be on clear fluids

Your Pre Surgery Checklist After Your Surgery Please tick once complete Fasting since required time if required Filled out Medical History section of this leaflet PHASE 1 RECOVERY Post Anaesthetic Care Unit PACU PHASE 2 RECOVERY Transfer to Day Unit if a day procedure Transfer to ward if staying overnight PHASE 3 RECOVERY Monitoring Education Discharge Filled out Allergies section of this leaflet Filled out Current Medications section of this leaflet All jewellery body piercings removed Have you arranged a friend family member to collect you and take you home after your operation Valuables left at home Have you brought a copy of your Covid 19 vaccination certificate Have you had a negative Covid test result if you have been advised one is necessary Covid tests may be required for patients undergoing a General Anaesthetic or those being admitted If your Covid test is taken in another facility you must bring the results certificate with you Phase 1 Recovery After your operation you will wake in Post Anaesthetic Care Unit PACU The first phase of recovery takes place here When you have met the criteria to return to the Surgical Day Unit SDU your PACU nurse will hand over your care to your SDU nurse If you are staying overnight a nurse from your ward will receive your handover of care

Phase 2 Recovery On return to the SDU you will begin your second phase of recovery Your nominated contact will be informed of your post operative return and given an approximate time to collect you Post Op the following will be monitored by your nurse Vital signs will be observed Any wounds will be monitored for ooze Diet should be tolerated prior to discharge Nausea and vomiting can sometimes be experienced post op this will need to be controlled prior to discharge and sometimes requires medications Pain some post op pain is to be expected We will ensure your pain is at a manageable level prior to discharge home You will need to mobilise with minimal or no assistance Sometimes dizziness can occur post sedation and you may need help for the first time getting out of bed You will need to be able to pass urine prior to discharge It is essential to meet the above criteria in order for staff to deem you fit for discharge Complications with any of the above may prolong your recovery and in some circumstances result in patients being admitted for observations overnight Phase 3 Recovery When you have met the above criteria your intravenous cannula will be removed and you will be given your discharge information prescription if required and education When your nurse is happy for you to go they will show you to the discharge lounge to await your lift home You will be provided with appropriate contact details if you have any further queries or issues when you return home
