HOLTER MONITOR PATIENT INFORMATION LEAFLET What is Holter ECG Monitoring A Holter monitor is a device that continuously records your heart s rhythm during daily activities usually for 24 hours and up to 7 days This is also called an ambulatory electrocardiogram The monitor records your heart s rhythm through electrodes that are placed on your chest Electrodes are small adhesive patches attached by wires to a monitor This test shows how your heart responds to normal activity or to certain medications Why is This Test Carried Out There are many reasons your doctor may order this test To help detect irregular heart beats cardiac arrhythmias To help evaluate chest pain To help check the heart s activity after a heart attack To help check how certain medicines are working To help discover the cause of certain symptoms such as di culty breathing dizziness light headedness or fainting It is important to keep the monitor dry do not shower or take a bath until the monitor is removed Do not disconnect the lead wires or electrodes as this will interfere with the recording The use of moisturiser talcum powder etc is not advised due to poor electrode skin adherence and artefact in the recording Fitting the Monitor If the monitor is on for a period longer than 24 hours it can be taken o and reapplied after showering in the following way The 3 electrodes are applied to the torso and the leads are attached as the colours indicate from right to left green yellow red Yellow CH1 CH3 On the right sternal border at the level of 2nd rib Red CH1 CH2 In the left anterior axillary line and on the 6th rib Green CH2 CH3 In the right anterior axillary line and on the 6th rib Red Yellow CH1 CM5 Red Green CH2 CC5 Green Yellow CH3 CM5R Cardiac Monitoring Devices Your cardiac monitor was fitted today Please make sure you return it 24 or 48hrs 3 5 or 7 days after fitting depending on your booking our technician will confirm this with you This valuable equipment needs to be downloaded analysed and information transferred to the cardiologist for reporting It must be cleaned and prepared in time for the next patient It is imperative you return this cardiac monitor on time to Suite 35 or at the main hospital reception Failure to do so will delay the next patient and will result in an additional daily charge If you are having di culties returning this device please call 01 293 6645 or 293 6694 Beacon Hospital thank you for your cooperation Symptom and Event Diary In order to get an accurate overview we would ask that outside your normal daily routine you keep a record of any symptoms you experience e g palpitations dizziness chest pain and what activities you are doing e g running We also ask that you keep note of the times you take your medications and what time you are going to sleep etc By recording these your Consultant will then have a more accurate picture of why readings may di er at di erent times DATE TIME EVENT DETAIL
