CLINICAL ETHICS SUPPORT SERVICES INFORMATION What Is Clinical Ethics Clinical ethics is a practical discipline which considers what is right or what should be done in the event of uncertainty or conflict of values An ethical dilemma problem exists when it is not clear what is the ethically sound action or course of action when there is disagreement about what is best for the patient The clinical ethics support service CESS provides an independent structured approach to identify analyse and resolve ethical issues in clinical practice The CESS responds to requests for support and advice in resolving clinical ethical dilemmas conflicts issues and questions pertaining to patient care The CESS is designed to support not to replace normal lines of communication about ethically troubling situations The CESS is not a decision making body but is primarily a resource an independent advisory body when patients family members or health professionals have reached the limits of their own personal or professional ability to address and or resolve ethical questions or dilemmas Who Can Make a Referral Requesting Clinical Ethics Support Any individual involved in a patient s care What Happens When a Referral Is Received All requests referrals meetings and documentation are confidential Should the referral to be related to clinical ethics the referrer will be notified When the referral is deemed clinical ethics based the referrer will be notified in writing within 24 hrs of receipt of the referral The referrer will meet with the clinical ethics advisor to identify and analyse the facts of the referred issue All individuals involved in the issue will meet to identify and analyse the facts Facilitation of discussion with other healthcare providers in the patient s care is o ered Expert input is requested when necessary Inclusion of the referrer continues throughout the process unless refused All personnel involved with the process will be notified in writing about the advice proposed for resolution Examples of Ethical Issues Decision making ability capacity Therapeutic interventions at end of life Withholding or withdrawal of treatment Consent process Discharge planning Admission procedure Insurance related issues Communication related issues Refusal of treatment
