BREAST MARKER CLIP PATIENT INFORMATION What Is A Breast Marker Clip A breast marker clip is a tiny piece of titanium metal made for this specific purpose Titanium is an inert metal which means it will not react with your body and will not set o metal detectors Why Do We Use A Breast Marker Clip A breast marker clip is used when an area of the breast needs to be marked for later reference These clips are inserted using ultrasound assistance When Is The Marker Clip Placed A marker clip will either be placed at the time of biopsy or it can be done as a separate procedure What Happens During The Procedure Firstly the breast is cleaned with antiseptic The skin is then numbed with local anaesthetic using a small needle This may sting for a couple of seconds until it begins to work A needle which contains the clip is inserted and image guidance is used to ensure the clip is deployed in the correct area The skin is cleaned once again and a paper stitch followed by a dressing is applied Most patients report little to no discomfort during this procedure After the clip has been inserted a mammogram of the breast may be taken to confirm the clips positioning The compression for this mammogram is not usually as tight as that used for diagnostic mammograms Are There Any Side Effects The most common side e ect after insertion of a breast marker clip is some bruising in the area More serious side e ects such as infection are extremely rare
